My Mentor: Mrs. Sterman-WILSON
My mentor on the trip was my choir director, Mrs. Hannah Sterman-Wilson. I chose Mrs. Sterman to be my mentor because she has been one of my most supportive instructors in all of my years of high school. She helped to organize, chaperone and conduct music pieces on the trip and had a lot of responsibilities as a leader. Mrs. Sterman is the Assistant Director of Choral Activities at Hilliard Darby High School. She graduated from The Ohio State University as a summa cum laude with a Bachelor's of Music Education and minor in theatre. While at OSU, she received an abundance of music and leadership scholarships and awards. She was an officer in various organizations, including The OSU chapter of the American Choral Director's Association, The OSU Women's Glee Club, and the Undergraduate Music Council. Mrs. Sterman conducts the Darby Women's Chorale, Women’s Chorus, and Chamber Choir. She also assists in conducting for Symphonic and Concert Choir. In addition, she teaches general music at Heritage Middle School, assists with various Heritage choirs, and music directs the Darby musical.
Mrs. Sterman has influenced me in so many ways as a student over the years! She has taught me how to effectively and safely use my voice, and how to protect it from harm, she has taught me to breathe and not to overwork myself when things are hard, and she has helped me to learn what genuine compassion and love looks like in practice. Over the trip, Mrs. Sterman encouraged me when I was overwhelmed with some of the music, made time to check up on me as I tried to assist other students, and helped me to be a better leader for others through her example. While I have had the privilege of growing as a musician and as a person under Mrs. Sterman for the last four years, I also had the blessing of learning from her over the trip, through the ways she interacted with others, kept track of information, strived to learn the culture and language of Italy, and through the dedication she put into each piece we sang. I am very thankful that I got to go on this trip, and even more thankful that I got to have such an amazing mentor!
